Vaqueros Sweep Geckos

The sixth ranked Central Arizona baseball team went on the road Tuesday afternoon and swept the ACCAC leading Gateway Geckos 1-0 and 7-2.

In the opener, the Vaqueros got a dominant pitching performance from sophomore Brock Dykxhoorn.  The 6'8 RHP threw a complete game shutout striking out 12 while only allowing 1 hit.  The Geckos threatened in the bottom of the seventh after the first two runners reached safely.  After a sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third, Dykxhoorn (3-1) got a strikeout and a ground ball to shortstop Cody Erickson to end the game.  Offensively, the Vaqueros were held to only 5 hits, but two came from Cody Farrell, including a two out RBI double in the third, which proved to be the game winner.

In the night cap, the bats came alive as the Vaqueros pounded out 14 hits from nine different hitters.  The offense was paced by catcher Riley Joyce and second baseman David Petrino who had three hits apiece.  Central jumped on Gateway early in game two with four runs in the second inning all coming with two outs.  Connor O'Neil, Joel Kuhnel, Sean Maxon and Junior Zepeda combined for 14 strike outs, while only allowing one walk on the mound.  O'Neil picked up the win improving his record to 2-1.  The Vaqueros are now 13-4 overall and 6-2 in the ACCAC.
Next, Central will travel to Yuma, AZ on Saturday to face Arizona Western for a DH starting at 12:00.
