CAC gets walk-off win over Douglas

SIGNAL PEAK — On this occasion, there was no tying in baseball.

Instead of being forced to settle for a tie after eight innings of Saturday's game, Central Arizona College won 5-4 in walk-off fashion over Douglas, B.C., at CAC Field after the umpires allowed one more inning to be played.

Pinch-hitter Manny Ramirez Jr. got aboard on a wind-blown double with one out in the bottom of the ninth, and David Petrino followed with a double to right to score pinch-runner Sam Welton.

Due to a 21⁄2-hour time limit at the 10 a.m. start, imposed because Douglas had to travel to Tucson for a later game, the umpires informed both teams that there would be no ninth inning. But after some initial confusion and a few heated words from CAC coach Jon Wente, the game continued.

Central reliever Sam Myers (2-2) retired the Royals in order in the top of the ninth, striking out the final two batters. The 11th-ranked Vaqueros then took care of business in quick fashion to raise their record to 22-7.

"In our last few losses, we've been in good position where we've had the tying run on base in multiple innings without getting that hit," Wente said. "Now that the guys see that we can come back and win a ballgame, maybe they'll gain some confidence going forward."

The victory completed a stretch of six nonconference games in four days, during which the Vaqueros went 5-1.

"We got to see our bench guys who haven't had a lot of opportunities. We feel like our team's deeper now, that we can trust some guys," Wente said. "Our bullpen guys got a ton of innings this week, and now we have a better feel of what they can do and what situations you can put them in to where they can be the most successful."

Central took a 1-0 lead in the first on Petrino's one-out RBI single. It came after Colby Hamilton singled and courtesy runner Andris Rizquez stole second.

Douglas left-hander Matt Trimble gave up just two more hits before exiting after six innings. He retired 17 of the last 19 batters he faced, including eight straight during one stretch.

"Fortunately, they made a pitching change and we were able to put some quality (at-bats) together," Wente said. "We didn't have many early, but late in the game we had a bunch."

Trailing 4-1, the Vaqueros tied it with three runs off struggling reliever Quinn Allen. Two runs came in the seventh, when Allen walked four, threw a wild pitch and was charged with a balk. Douglas coach Cavanagh Whitely was ejected in the seventh after expressing his opinion — somewhat mildly — on a ball call that he thought should have been a strike.

CAC loaded the bases on walks to Tim Hergert and Aldo Koutsoyanopulos and Dillon Bigcrane's one-out single. Brad Holland then drew a walk and Koutsoyanopulos scored on a balk.

Allen hit Cody Farrell to open the Central eighth. Farrell went to second on a wild pitch and took third on Koutsoyanopulos' infield single before Spencer O'Neil delivered a game-tying sacrifice fly.

Douglas (1-5) tied it 1-1 in the fourth when Jordan Kornberger stole home on the back end of a double steal. The Royals went ahead 2-1 with an unearned run off CAC starter Justin Seiwald in the fifth and made it 3-1 in the sixth when Kornberger doubled, took third on a wild pitch and scored on Jackson Temple's groundout.

Jeff Bouchard had a two-out RBI single in the seventh off reliever Jared Koenig.

Seiwald gave up two singles to start the game, then retired 10 in a row before hitting Kornberger with one out in the fourth. Seiwald struck out 11 and walked none in six innings.

The Vaqueros had six hits, with Petrino going 3 for 5 and Hamilton going 2 for 4.

Tyler Yorko had two of the Royals' seven hits.
