Vaqueros take season opener.

Vaqueros take season opener.

Opening night 2016 at Phoenix College turned out to be one heck of a lot better than opening night 2015. Instead of sitting around and waiting for the rain to stop in Las Vegas, it was a beautiful night and first pitch was a called strike to Vaquero freshman Ernie de la Trinidad.

In the end, Central Arizona rapped eleven hits, including four two baggers, and scored 8 runs in the 8-4 victory. The winning pitcher was sophomore Daily Carnes who threw the final two and a third keeping the Bears scoreless and striking out three.

"They threw pretty well" said Head Coach Anthony Gilich of Phoenix College's pitchers, who held a 4-2 lead until the Vaquero top of the eighth. With a five run eighth and another in the ninth, the Vaqueros are 1-0. Game two of the three game set is Saturday at 2PM and game three is Sunday at noon for the home opener.

Starting catcher Brent Gibbs slashed two doubles, and Mitchell Robinson, Ernie de la Trinidad each doubled.

Who hit the first homerun of 2016 for the Vaqueros?

"Nah" Gilich said when asked if any left the yard.

Stat of the day: Jaime Estrada went 0-2 with four walks. Here we go again! Central pitcher Dakody Clemmer started and canned three, Jared Montoya struck out four and Daily struck out three more for a more than commendable Central pitching night.

Let this be a sign because if it takes about half a season to really figure out who does what well on this practically new team, then winning along the way is bonus.

"It's great winning on opening night" said Gilich. Okay so nothing earth-shattering in that statement, but it really is.
