Glendale Takes Two From Central

To think about:
As of March 10th, the Central Arizona College Vaqueros are first in on-base-percentage in the conference, second in slugging percentage, first in K's per 9, and second in fewest runs allowed. In your head, you think it's just a matter of time before the timely hits start coming around. Excepting the 9th inning of game two, that's all it would have taken to turn this DH around. And a few other games this season.
Game 1
Grant Townsend is having a terrific year and he threw incredibly well in game one striking out 8 in five innings to put him at fifth in the ACCAC in K's. He had a 2-1 lead after five innings, but Glendale Community College started putting men on base in the top of the sixth and did that most of the day scoring here and there. With three runs in the sixth, the Gauchos held on for a 4-3 win in seven innings. Devin Ray doubled and Alix Garcia had two hits. Peyton Remy (pictured below) came on in the sixth to strand Glendale runners and kept them off the board in the top of the seventh to keep Central a run back going into the bottom, but it was a complete game and five hitter for Glendale starter Beau Briske as the Cowboys headed to game two.
Game 2
It was Glendale ahead 5-2 going into the ninth until The Gauchos scored six runs to end this one. Central put together a few hits and made a few things happen, but Glendale kept putting runners on and it was their day.
Here Brent Bailey puts an outside pitch through the left side with a runner on. Bailey had two hits on Saturday and probably the hardest hit ball of the game came off the bat of Roger Varela who doubled into left, and had three hits in the game.
Chris Diehl had a good day behind the plate. An early season pitching trademark is that pitching coach Jerry A'Hearn seems to have put an emphasis on keeping the ball low and the Central pitchers have done that all year. Leading the conference in strikeouts sells that one. Diehl blocked them all in game two, the proof is in the 'guards.
Central Arizona sits 4.5 back of D1 leader South Mountain and 2 games back of 2nd place Western Arizona in conference play. The D1 race is wide open and it's early.
