It's A Split With Northeastern For Central

It's almost like losing your golf swing and then one day it comes back and it brings a tear to your eye. But then, it's gone again, mysteriously.

The Vaqueros flashed the skill in all phases in game one but couldn't get the sticks going in game two, it was a split with Northeastern College on a hot Wednesday at The Big House.

Game 1

Coach Anthony Gilich said it again "Pikai is just on fire" and he has his average up to .389 with a three-for-four day at the plate. Brent Bailey scored twice leading off, and Jake Vander Wal continues to just plain make things happen in many ways. He's an adventure out there. Vandy doubled and tripled, scored, and drove in four more. Ty Johnson collected a few hits, and Roger Varela is hitting his classic line shots. Varela went 2-2 with another sac fly and scored.

"Oh he was great" said Gilich of starting pitcher Will McAffer. McAffer won his fourth game going five innings and canning five, he walked only one. One of the two runs the Plainsmen scored was unearned. It was a 9-2 final and the golf swing is back.

Game 2

"Back to last week's stuff" said Gilich. "We get 'em on and then pop up or something and we've lost a run. Those runs cost us ball games."

It does seem like this little period of LOB has extended itself for a longer period than most teams go through. The Vaqueros consistently get runners on, but just can't plate them. Central went up early in the first with an Alix Garcia sacrifice fly, but that was it in a second game 4-1 loss. Jye Deeble crafted his way through six innings, his longest outing of the year and left with a 1-1 ball game. The head coach was quite happy with that start.

"He threw a great game" said Gilich. The comment on paper doesn't do the compliment justice. You have to hear how it's said.

Both games were pre-determined seven inning games, but Northeastern poked around for three runs in the top of the seventh to come out with a split.

Brad Morgan had a perfect day at the plate hitting lead-off with a nice SAC bunt, a double and single, and he scored once. He is currently hitting .318, good for fourth on the team. Sam Schroeder hit an exciting triple and Nate Soriano, starting both games in center, laid down a nice bunt for a base hit.

You just feel like a run is coming.

Baseball on Thursday and Friday in Coolidge with Western Oklahoma State and Western Nebraska in town. Central has the weekend off before starting off the second half of the season next week with Gateway and Mesa.
