Central Arizona College took the second game of a two game set on Wednesday afternoon in Coolidge to split with Gateway Community College. After losing 3-0 on Tuesday in Mesa, the Vaqueros rallied from a 3-0 deficit Wednesday for a 7-4 win.

Game 1

Peyton Remy threw six innings striking out five and overall it was a good outing. Remy got hit with a liner pretty hard early in the sixth, and it knocked him off balance and fell on his hip. He shook it off and is ok. He gave up eight hits but when he left, the score was 1-0 and the run was unearned. At the end, Central had only three hits off a tricky Gateway starter and were shut out 3-0. All three runs were unearned. Sam Schroeder hit a solid double down the right field line.

Remy leads all starters with an eyebrow-tilting 1.71 ERA, but yet is only 1-3 on the season.

Game 2

Gateway led 3-0 after an inning. After a couple of errors with two outs, Gateway put together three hits and three runs scored. in the third, the middle of the Vaqueros order scraped around four hits and tied the game at three, and with Gateway leading 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh after scoring another unearned run, Matt Kroon hit a two run triple to give Central the lead. The story of game two was pitching, starter Will McAffer threw a fine four and Andrew Edwards, Bradley Gonzales, and Grant Townsend three nada for the final five. 

Gonzales had the gas striking out five of the seven battes he faced. Out of the bullpen, the Big Cat now has an ERA of 1.50 with 28 k in 18 innings.

Andrew Edwards threw a hitless two and the head coach Anthony Gilich went with red hot Grant Townsend for a scorelss ninth.

Alix Garcia, Devin Ray and Matt Kroon all had three hits on the day. Ray hustled a double and Kroon's triple put Central ahead to stay. 

"I wanted Pikai up with guys on base" said Gilich. Pikai hit third instead of second. Andrew Chartrand had a nice pinch hit RBI to add to Central's lead in the eighth.

Stat: After the Gateway win on Wednesday, the Central pitching staff is now up to just over 36 innings pitched without giving up an earned run. Nine unearned runs have scored, but still.
