Baseball wins first two before heading to Las Vegas

Game number two of the 2020 season was a good one for two and a half innings at the Big House Saturday afternoon.

After three innings it got even better for some....and a whole lot worse for others.

The Vaqueros plated twelve runs in the bottom of the third to take a 12-1 lead, tacked on four more in the eighth and won the weekend with a 16-2 win over Gateway Community College.

Central won their first two games by scoring twenty runs and giving up two.

Four games in Henderson Nevada await, all starting this Thursday.

"Ky (Bush) didn't show his best stuff but found a way to keep them from a big inning. The game could have gotten away from us early" said head coach Anthony Gilich.

Bush started and threw three innings without giving up an earned run and struck out six in his three. His command was spotty early in his first game as a Vaquero, but got better and better as he went along.

With a 12-1 lead, Gilich used the day to get innings for pitchers, using six more pitchers who gave up only three more hits on the day. Bush picked up the win.

Shane Spencer also made his first pitching appearance for Central by striking out the side in the ninth inning.

That's always a great way to end the game, no matter the score.

Striking out the side is great, period.

Hitting highlights for the day included a grand slam from Logan Valencia, which, as well, is always great no matter what the score. Sophomore infielder Matt Aribal hit his first Vaquero homerun and scored three times for some dandy veteran leadership.

Newcomers Tyler Kelly, Preston Godfrey (kind-of newcomer as a redshirt), and Ryan Grabosch all doubled, Kiko Romero and Ricky Gutierrez-Meier had two hits apiece and Central totaled fifteen hits on the day.

All-around team win!

Construction continues on the new Central Arizona College grandstand and pressbox, but the first and third base line bleachers are just fine as always.
