Bio

Coach Wood was born in Kingston, Jamaica and began his illustrious track and field career at the prestigious and highly-respected Kingston College Boys’ School in Kingston. His standout performances in Jamaica’s Interschool Boys’ and Girls’ Championships landed him a scholarship in 1986 to attend Arizona State University (ASU). The Grand Canyon State has been his home ever since.

During his four years at Arizona State, he competed in the 110m hurdles, sprint relays, and long jump. In 1990, he was awarded a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology and took a hiatus from the sport to pursue his other passion: working with disadvantaged youths. In 2013, he earned his Master of Arts Degree in Sport-Exercise Psychology.

However, the lure of athletics never waned, and in 1999, Andrew embraced his passion for the sport in a new capacity: as coach. He has been a sprint, hurdle, and long jump coach for Moon Valley High (1999-2003) and North High (2007-2008) respectively, hurdle and jump coach for Phoenix College (2003-2006), while working as a volunteer coach with the “Do Right Track Club” (2003-2010). Andrew is a USATF level 1 certified coach.

Coach Wood starts his fifth year with the Central Arizona College track and field program. During his tenure, he was responsible for developing the school’s women’s 100 meter record holder and National Junior College Champion Kierre Beckles as well as Texas Tech 110 meter hurdle standout Shane Brathwaite. He also coached Tamika Williams-Jones to a National Junior College long jump title. Coach Wood mentored 11 National Junior College All Americans and 18 regional champions.

Among his many successes training junior athletes, he is especially proud of the Olympian, William Clay and 2007 NCAA long jump champion, Dashelle Andrews.

Besides athletics, Andrew continues his career as a juvenile probation officer which he has done for the past 23 years. He is also an active member of the Phoenix Phi Iota graduate chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated.  He is happily married to wife, Janelle, and is father to a senior college student-athlete, Bryce.
