Women CC Conference Champs-Men Second

Tucson-The Central Arizona College men and women both competed at the ACCAC Conference Championship on a windy day at El Rio Golf Course.  Both teams had respectable showings with the women's team besting the men by remaining undefeated among other junior colleges in the state.

The Vaqueras, who were led once again by Marleena Eubanks, finished as conference champions on Saturday.  Eubanks effort, which resulted in a 2nd place overall finish, ran a solid 19.39 5k in the wind.  Next to finish for the women's team was Marley Henson (19.50) for 5th place.  Rounding out the scoring for the top five spots for the women were Jessica Shirley (20.08) for 6th place, Ramsay Chancellor (20.18) for 7th place, and Jelani Huma (20.56) with a 13 place finish.  The women, who are currently ranked #1 in the nation, solidified their standing by besting the #4 ranked team (Mesa Community College) by 21 points.  Mesa took second at the meet.

RESULTS

The Vaqueros, who are currently ranked #1 in the nation, did not have as good of a showing as predicted.  The men would have to settle for a 2nd place finish, losing to Paradise Valley Community College with a score of 34-42.  The vaqueros were racing without the #3 runner due to an injury but PV was still in control of the race placing all five of their runners in front of Central's fouth.  Freshman stud Gilbert Kigen remained undefeated after two races, winning the meet with a 24.22 8k besting the 2nd place runner by over a minute.  George Perez ran another impressive race, finishing 2nd overall with a 25.37.  Rounding out the next 3 scoring spots for the Vaqueros were Emmanuel Hildalgo (26.27) for 9th place.  Randy Chavez (27.00) for 14th place and Tim Ronin (27.10) for 16th place.

Coach Jon Harmon had this to say to sum up the meet "Coach Tavares and I were impressed with the women, they all ran with grit and determination, they wanted to remain ranked #1 and wanted to set the standard for the other teams.  The men had some solid individual performances, but still haven't come together as a unit.  We had our #3 guy out but it was no excuse, that's an opportunity for the other men to step up and fill the void.  We have some work to do on both sides but the season is early and we're excited to get rolling."

The Vaqueros and Vaqueras will be back in action on October 9th at the U of A open in Tucson, AZ
