Mens Womens Cross Country - Another Strong Showing

Tucson-The Central Arizona College Men and Women competed at the University of Arizona twilight meet on Friday.  The meet hosted university runners from U of A and ASU and some of their unattached runners.  Both the men and women had strong showings and were able to put in quality effort on a windy day in Tucson.  The men raced 4.1 miles and the women ran a 3 mile race.

The Vaqueros were once led again by Gilbert Kigen who toured the course in 20.26.  Gilbert once again dominated the race, beating U of A's top runner by 26 seconds.  With the win, Gilbert remains undefeated in all three races he's run this year.  Coming in second and third for the men were Jorge Perez (21:34) with Brian Masavesya closely on his back with a 21:36.  Tim Ronin, who cracked the top four on the team for the first time this year, ran a 22.07 and rounding out scoring for the men was Oscar Amayo with a 22:29.  The men were second behind U of A in a small meet with only three teams.  Coach Jon Harmon had this to say about the men's race "The men looked solid today, times will not justify the performance but to come out here and beat some quality university runners was great to see. Gilbert is running at a scary level right now! We had some runners step up and shifted the top five for us, all the guys are going to battle for the top 7 spots till the end of the season"

The Vaqueras continued to lean on the experience of its sophomores, with Marleena Eubanks continuing to push the ladies with a 4th place overall finish (18.36) and Marley Henson with a 7th place finish (18:23) on the 3 mile course.  Next in for the ladies was Ramsay Chancellor (20:11) who was followed closely by teammate Jelani Huma (20:13), Jelani made a top four finish for the Vaqueros for the first time this year.  Finishing the scoring for the team was Jessica Shirley with a 20:20, respectively. The ladies placed 2nd behind nationally ranked U of A.  Coach Harmon wrapped up the women's race "I was impressed with the ladies, U of A has a talented team but we fought hard and it was good to see the freshman continuously progress as the season does.  Our sophomores continue to set the standard on how we need to race and really motivate the freshmen"

Central Arizona will be back in action next week at the Highlander Invitational in Riverside, California on Saturday.
