Highlander Invite-Cross Country Hits Huge Records

Riverside, CA- Central Arizona competed in the Highlander Invitational at Riverside, California on Saturday and posted some huge personal records on both the men and women's side.  On a clear overcast day, the men and women toed the line with some quality universities and it resulted in fantastic times and effort for both squads.  The men finished 2nd overall only to D1 school Long Beach St. while the women placed 10th.

Leading the Vaqueros was once again fulfilled by Gilbert Kigen and once again, remained unbeaten,  Gilbert outdistanced the second place runner by 6 seconds to win the meet with a 17:37 6k mark.  Continuing the theme was Jorge Perez (17:53) and Brian Masavesya (17:55) with 6th and 7th places, respectively.  Emmanuel Hildalgo (18:43) rebounded from the previous week to finish fourth for the Vaqueros who was followed closely by Tim Ronin (18:45).

The Vaqueras continued to run as a team on a mission, having six of the seven girls setting new personal records this season on the 5k course.  Leading the way once again was Marleena Eubanks (18:08) who set a pr by over a minute to place 8th overall.  Marley Henson (18:43) ran a 16 second pr and finished 32nd overall. Ramsay Chancellor (19:31) and teammate Jessica Shirley (19:33) battled for the next spot on the team, with Chancellor pulling away in the last 200 meters.  Finishing scoring for the ladies was Jelani Huma (19:41) who also set a 40 second pr.

Coach Jon Harmon had this to wrap up the meet "Coach Tavares and I are extremely pleased with both squads today.  We had 3 guys run sub 15 at the 5k mark and helped CAC get second at this meet while the women continue to run impressively as a pack, and all but one, walked away with a new personal record.  We are hitting our stride at the right time and are getting geared for the region and national meets."

Central Arizona will be back in action in two weeks in Casa Grande.  The school is hosting the NJCAA Region 1 meet on October 31st at Villago Park.
