CAC Men and Women Cross Country win ACCAC championships

The Central Arizona Men and Women competed at the ACCAC Conference Championship on Saturday September 28th at Mesa Community College and both teams won, respectively, to take home the conference championship.

Head Coach Paul Tavares was very happy with both teams performances. "One of our goals for the season was to win both Conference Championship titles. "" I am proud that the team accomplished this without backing off from our training". " We still have a lot of work ahead of us, but it is a good start." Stated Coach Tavares

The Vaqueros (22 points) were led by freshman newcomer James Kapel, who outdistanced himself from the pack four miles into the race to cruise to a 25:47 for the 8k race, claiming first place overall in the process.  Sophomore Jesus Adana avoided falling the last 400 meters of the race to hold onto third overall while running 26:03, respectively.  Sophomore Habtamu Cheney (4th), Kyle Partin (6th), and Aaron Orar (8th) rounded out scoring for the men.  Paradise Valley (50 points) took home runner-up honors and Mesa Community College (57) placed third.  "The goal for today was to focus on our 5th-8th runners starting to close the gap on our top four and they did just that.  The men had a race plan and executed it well but we are aware that there still lies a lot of work ahead of us" Stated Coach Jon Harmon.

The Vaqueras also performed well on Saturday winning the title with 26 points, 18 points in front of Mesa Community College (2nd) and 34 points in front of Paradise Valley (3rd).  The women were led by freshman Precious Robinson with an 18:53 showing on the 5k course, good enough for 2nd overall.  Following in hot pursuit was Makayah Richard (19:00) for third place honors.  Rounding out the top five were Alisia Honyumptewa (4th overall), Tshwanelo Maruping (8th), and Esther Beck (9th).  "Coach Tavares and I know what these ladies are capable of and when they get to that level this team will be a force in the JUCO ranks."  Stated Coach Harmon.

Central Arizona will be competing at the Mesa Community College Invitational on 10/5/19 and will then make a quick trip to Santa Clara, CA for the Bronco Invitational on 10/19/19.
