Vaqueros Win the 2023 George Young Invitational

October 7, 2023

The Central Arizona College Cross Country teams participated in The George Young Invitational which was hosted by CAC last week.  The course toured the beautiful campus in Coolidge, which started at George Young Gymnasium.

The Vaqueros claimed 1st place out of 5 teams.  The schools participating at the meet were NAIA, NJCAA D1 and D2 colleges.  Schools in attendance were Central Arizona, Phoenix College, Park University, Pima, Ottawa University, Estrellea Mountain CC, Southern Nevada, Dine College, and Tohono O'odham.

Top finisher for the Vaqueros went to Jorge Corona, who toured the course in 26:29 which was good enough for claiming meet champion. There were 48 finishers in this years race.  In addition to Jorge placing as the Vaqueros top finisher, he also ran his best race since dealing with pneumonia earlier in the year.

"I'm proud of Jorge, he has battled through a lot the last two months and is now starting to get back into shape and gaining confidence in the process." Stated Head Coach Jon Harmon.

"Jordan, Daniel, Thomas were all together with Jorge for nearly 4 miles so I was happy to see that and given the temperature and course we ran on I'm very impressed."  "The men really needed to rebound today from our performance at conference and we did just that, I believe we are back on the right path heading into our meet in California."

The remaining Vaqueros finished as follows:

Jordan Myers (26:46) placed 2nd overall.
Daniel Biakeddy (27:08) placed 5th overall.
Thomas MacAskill (27:47) placed 10th overall.
Luca Onyejiaka (28:32) placed 14th overall.
Seth Leslie (28:39) 15th overall.
Justice Bojorquez (29:38) 19th overall.

The men will be back in action on October 14th at the Highlander Invitational, which is being held by University of California Riverside.  The men will race at 8:00am and the women will follow at 9:00am.
