October 28, 2023

The Central Arizona College Cross Country Teams participated in the Region 1 Championship on Saturday.  The meet, which was hosted by Glendale Community College, consisted of all the junior colleges in the state.

The Vaqueras claimed Region 1 honors by defeating Pima 15 to 40, respectively.  Central Arizona College ran to a perfect score, meaning all of its top 5 scoring runners took the top 5 places.  This was the second time this season the vaqueras accomplished the result.

Top finisher for the Vaqueras went to Temyra Bia, who toured the course in 19:46 which was good enough for 1st overall. There were 12 runners in this years race.  In addition to Temyra placing as the Vaqueros top finisher, she also ran her season best in the 5k.

"I'm proud of Temyra, we had a strategy before the race and she stuck to it." Stated Head Coach Jon Harmon. "She had been challenging herself more in practice each day and the results are really starting to show."

"Alexis, Alesyia, Brianna, and Jessica all worked with Lasundari just as planned and it produced us solidifying the 1-5 spots.  A very solid effort all around."

The Vaqueras defeated 15th ranked Pima.

The remaining Vaqueras finished as follows:

Alexis Fisher (20:01) placed 2nd overall and new PR.
Alesyia Barlow (20:12) placed 3rd overall.
Brianna Samuels (20:29) placed 4th overall.
Jessica Viera (23:24) placed 5th overall.

The vaqueras will conclude their season on November 11th at the NJCAA National Championship which will be held in Huntsville, AL.  The men will race at 8:00am and the women will follow at 9:00am.
