YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Softball team (18-11, 4-6) extended its winning streak to three games with a doubleheader sweep of Central Arizona (7-17, 1-9) on Friday afternoon at Charlie Dine Softball Field, winning game one 8-7 and shutting out the Vaqueras 4-0 in game two.
Autumn Arriola went 2-for-4 and drove in three runs and Rauni Gallegos collected two hits, going 2-for-3 in the game-one win.
After Central Arizona scored a run in the first inning, the Matadors responded with four runs in the bottom of the first inning, highlighted by a three-run homer off the bat of Arriola to put the Matadors up 4-1.
Central Arizona chipped away and took the lead back in the top of the seventh inning before the Matadors answered with two in the bottom half of the inning, winning 8-7 on a Larissa Rueda RBI single.
Lili Vigil German threw seven shutout innings in game two while Lea Frechette went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in, in the 4-0 win.
Arizona Western scored a pair of runs in the first inning and doubled the lead in the fourth inning with two more runs.
Gallegos collected two hits for the second consecutive game and Jayleen Espinoza doubled in the win.
The Matadors and the Vaqueras wrap up the series on Saturday, March 22, playing a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 am at Charlie Dine Softball Field.
