Volleyball returns home to beat Central Arizona 3-0

YUMA, Ariz. – The No. 16 ranked Arizona Western Lady Matadors' Volleyball team (15-4, 5-0) returned home with a 3-0 win over Central Arizona (2-11, 2-6) on Wednesday night at House Gymnasium to remain unbeaten in ACCAC play.

Gabriela Martensson led the Lady Matadors' with eight kills in the three sets while Evelyn Trivino had 18 assists in the win.

The Lady Matadors scored nine of the first 12 points to jump out to a 9-3 lead in the first set. After Arizona Western opened a ten-point lead, Central Arizona capitalized on a series of Lady Matadors' errors to close the gap to 17-11. The Lady Matadors scored the final two points of the set to take the opener 25-17.

Arizona Western scored the first four points in the second set and jumped out to a 6-1 lead before Central Arizona cut the Lady Matadors' advantage to 6-5. Trivino recorded back-to-back aces to push the lead to 11-7 and eventually opened up a 16-11 lead on a Jazmin Cuellar kill. The Lady Matadors went on to take the second set 25-17.

Arizona Western pulled away in the final set, scoring eight of the first 11 points and building a 21-9 lead before taking four of the final seven points to put the match away with a 25-12 win in the third set.

Aly Reeser recorded nine digs in the win while Josi Capellan had five kills on just nine attacks to help the Lady Matadors to the win.

The Lady Matadors head back on the road on Friday, September 29, heading to Thatcher to take on Eastern Arizona in the first of two ACCAC matchups this season at 7:00 p.m.
