Corral and Juarez lead Softball to doubleheader split with Central Arizona

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Softball team (25-18, 11-13) split a doubleheader with the Central Arizona Vaqueras (11-33, 5-23) on Friday afternoon in Coolidge, Ariz., winning game one 14-12 before falling 10-6 in game two.

Krisilyn Corral went 2-for-5 with a home run and five runs batted in to help lead the Matadors to a 14-12 win in game one of the doubleheader.

Corral got the scoring started with a three-run homer in the first inning which was matched by a three-run bottom of the first by the Vaqueras.

Arizona Western took the lead back in the second inning, scoring two runs on singles by Rauni Gallegos and Natalie Pinon.

After the Vaqueras grabbed the lead right back, the Matadors plated four runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by doubles by Gallegos and Larissa Rueda to give the Matadors a 9-6 lead.

After teams traded big innings, the Matadors scored three runs in the seventh inning to take a 14-11 lead and hung on for a 14-12 win in game one.

Daysy Juarez went 2-for-3 with a double and three runs batted in while Larissa Rueda went 2-for-4 with an RBI in the Matadors' 10-6 loss in game two.

After taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a Juarez single, Central Arizona scored three runs in the second inning.

The big innings continued for the Matadors in the fourth, scoring five runs highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Juarez, putting the Matadors in front 6-3.

The Vaqueras scored the final seven runs of the game, scoring three runs in the fourth inning and four more in the seventh.

The Matadors will take on the Vaqueras again on Saturday, April 26, in an ACCAC doubleheader beginning at Noon.
