Lady Matadors' Softball fends off Vaqueras for doubleheader sweep

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western College Lady Matadors Softball team (14-10, 6-2) held on to sweep a doubleheader with Central Arizona (11-6, 5-3) on Saturday afternoon at Charlie Dine Softball Field, winning game one 4-3 before taking the second game 11-9.

Jayleen Espinoza went 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI while GiGi Garcia collected a pair of hits and drove in a run in the Lady Matadors' 4-3 win in game one.

Central Arizona scored a run in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead before the Lady Matadors tied the game in the second on a GiGi Garcia RBI double and took the lead in the third in an error and an Espinoza RBI double. Arizona Western added another run in the fifth on a Madison Morgan RBI single. The Vaqueras scored a pair of runs in the seventh but they left the tying run on base.

Jessie Garcia struck out eight batters in seven innings of work to earn the win.

Jessie Garcia drove in four runs in game two, going 2-for-3 with a home run while Mollie Forbes went 2-for-4 with a solo homer in the Lady Matadors' 11-9 win in game two.

Garcia put the Lady Matadors in front with a solo homer in the second inning and Arizona Western scored two runs in back-to-back innings, opening up a 4-0 lead. The Lady Matadors scored three runs in the fourth inning highlighted by a two-run double from Espinoza.

Summer Simpson held the Vaqueras off the board until the fifth inning when Central scored four runs before the Lady Matadors scored three in their half of the fifth. Forbes hit a solo homer in the sixth as Central closed the gap to two before Jessie Garcia finished the game off in the circle.

The Lady Matadors head on the road on Tuesday, March 19, heading to Phoenix to take on Paradise Valley in an ACCAC doubleheader beginning at Noon.
