Baseball suffers pair of losses to Central Arizona in final doubleheader of season

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Baseball team (34-20, 18-17) dropped a pair of games to Central Arizona (37-14, 22-13) on Friday afternoon, losing 14-0 in five innings and 8-3 at Walt Kammann Baseball Field.

The Matadors were held hitless in game one of the doubleheader as Central Arizona starting pitcher Kai Fyke tossed a complete game in the Matadors' 14-0 loss in five innings.

Central Arizona opened the scoring in the second inning with three runs and duplicated that frame in the fourth to push the lead to 6-0.

The Vaqueros batted 12 times in the fifth inning to score eight runs to pull away from the Matadors in the opener.

Javier Diaz had a pair of hits, including a solo home run in the Matadors' 8-3 loss in game two of the doubleheader.

Diaz gave the Matadors a 1-0 lead with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first inning before Central Arizona scored twice in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead.

Gerardo Castro doubled in a run and Luca Hoerger drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to give the Matadors the lead back at 3-2. Central Arizona scored five unanswered runs to take their third consecutive game over the Matadors.

The Matadors will wrap up regular season play by finishing the series with Central Arizona on Saturday, April 26, with a single nine-inning game beginning at Noon at Walt Kammann Baseball Field.
