Vaqueros baseball splits with #9 Southern Nevada

Central Arizona came up against #9 ranked College of Southern Nevada in NJCAA D1 early in the season and on a perfect baseball day at Signal Peak, dropped a squeaker in the first game 3-2, and ripped 15 hits in the second for a 9-2 win.

In an oddity of oddities, it was the bunting that let Central down in the first game. In those tight ones like this one (3-2), the value of each base is magnified exponentially and it kills you when you go 0-3 in attempts. This is a team that will blast one to deep enter and roll one down when you expect it and when you least expect it, so not bunting well has the Coach shaking his head.

An overall good six for sophomore starter Justin Seiwald, striking out six and offering no free passes.

In game 2 the bats came alive a bit with 15 hits.  Tim Hergert and Cooper Esmay had 3 each, and this time it was Caleb Henderson with the ya-ya to left. Another freshman pitcher George Castillo cruised on the mound only allowing one hit in 6 innings.  Sophomore Sam Myers made two relief appearances in the same day and did not allow a run. Impressive.

The Vaqueros stand at 0-0 and 3-1. Two more Saturday! Catch the Vaqueros in a Saturday DH as El Paso Community College comes to the spacious yard.

What's up Coach?

"I am proud of the guys for bouncing back after losing a close one, but we need to continue to raise our standards as the season moves forward."-Coach Anthony Gilich
