Game 1
"He's one of the best in the league and we hit him pretty good, just didn't have anything to show for it" said head coach Anthony Gilich of the Yavapai College lefty that threw game one. "They made about four unbelievable defensive plays, two of them were double plays, and two diving outfield plays that were probably doubles if they fall, you know, you tip your cap to them."
The Vaqueros had the tieing run at the plate but couldn't get 'em around in the ninth as the Cowboys lost their first game of the season in game one, the final was 3-0. George Castillo threw a very good game striking out 8 in six innings, walking only one. Castillo leads the ACCAC in k's. The game two starter Dakody Clemmer is tied for second. Andrew Edwards struck out the side in the Yavapai seventh, a feat always worthy of note.
"My biggest concern was how we were going to bounce back thirty minutes later in game two."
Game 2
"So we went out there and we beat 'em 9-0"
On the second pitch of Centrals' first at-bat in game two, Makoa Rosario crushed a one-hopper to dead center. Funny how that one pitch can change everything, and it did. Jaime Estrada moved Koa to third on a groundout and Central had the first of nine runs cross on a wild pitch. Catcher Chris Kobar singled three times, Mitchell Robinson hit twice and knocked one in, Caleb Henderson doubled and walked twice, and SS Roger Varela walked twice, scored, drove one in and played a perfect short. Central committed no errors on the day.
Starter Dakody Clemmer lowered his ERA to 2.63 and struck out 6 in a command performance, giving up nothing in seven full innings.
"They didn't hit him very well at all" said Gilich.
Ben Skuro struck out two of his three in the eighth, and Jared Montoya finished off Yavapai in the ninth for the Central shutout.
In total, Central Arizona College held the conference's team batting average leader to three runs in two games. The Roughriders are hitting .369 on the year and lead the ACCAC in HR (not close) but homered only once.
The Vaqueros lead the ACCAC in runs scored (not close). Would you rather lead the conference in runs scored, or round-trippers? Well, both, to be honest. : )
This was a good day for Central as they move to 18-1. and 5-1. The coach is happy and so are the players, fuel up the limo's and head to Cochise for two on Tuesday.
