Varela pops one out
Varela pops one out

Vaqueros bang four bombs, rap 16 hits, yet lose.

Four homeruns and sixteen hits is what you'd call productive. But not when the other guys have nineteen hits and three bombs too.

I couldn't get a word out of the head coach after this one. He didn't volunteer anything for post-game.

What could you say?

As usual, the Vaqueros grabbed a big lead early at 11-2 after five innings and scored three more times but still lost 17-14 to Gateway Community College on Tuesday afternoon. Gateway scored three times in the sixth and added eleven more runs in the seventh. Not all the Central pitchers had their best stuff on this day (although Kyle Atkinson quieted Gateway down in the last two) and it's just one you forget. Short memory as they say, one of the best baseball sayings.

"It's a grind. You'll have days like these" is what hitting coach Jerry Hardin would say.

All of Central's starting lineup recorded hits excepting Brent Bailey, but he walked twice and scored twice making a productive day. The Vaqueros powered four out of the house, courtesy of Jaime Estrada, Caleb Henderson, Mitchell Robinson and Roger Varela. It just wasn't enough.

Estrada also tripled as one of his three hits, Robinson also singled two more times and Makoa Rosario doubled. Varela drove in three.

Movin' on. It's Gateway again Wednesday at their place and Friday starts a three-game set against Mesa Community College, Central is now 1/2 game behind Cochise College in the ACCAC standings.
