Good things and and some not so good things for the season opening four game CSN Baseball Tournament in Henderson Nevada this weekend for the Vaqueros of Central Arizona College.
But nothing really bad at all.
Central lost the opener on Friday against New Mexico Junior College with a final of 9-1.
"Well we got beat, got beat pretty good. Left a ton of guys on base, they're a pretty good team. They had some pretty good arms" said head coach Anthony Gilich.
If it's possible to say this, 9-1 wasn't as bad as it looks, the score was only 4-1 after six innings, but a few errors and some "first outing jitters" saw Central give up four walks for the 9-1 final.
Game two on Saturday was the #3 team in San Jacinto of Texas against #18 Central and Lucas Knowles threw very well in his first Central outing, throwing 4 and 2/3 and was taken out after being hit with a line drive just to be safe. He had struck out seven Ravens, walking two and and had given up three hits. Central went into the top of the ninth with a 5-4 lead and two outs with nobody on. A walk and a few hits and a double put San Jacinto ahead and the final was 6-5.
Central took game three Saturday afternoon against local team Gateway Community College with a final of 14-6 in eight innings.
"We played sloppy but so did they" said Gilich. "We just kinda...got 'em."
Liam Spence, leading off, went 4-4 with a double, the #2 hitter Hunter Jump and #3 hitter Ernny Ordonez both added two hits apiece in the win.
To head out 2-2 for the weekend, Central beat Utah State Eastern 8-1. Clayton Keyes hit two triples for Central, Hunter Jump hit Central's first homerun of the year, and starter Leo Palacios struck nine hitters in four innings.
