SIGNAL PEAK — Devon Dixon's RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning sent the Central Arizona College baseball team to a 4-3 victory over Salt Lake (Utah) on Sunday at CAC Field and completed a second straight four-game series sweep for the 10th-ranked Vaqueros.

Trailing 3-1 after Salt Lake scored two runs in the sixth inning, Central (8-0) answered with one in the sixth and one in the seventh.

Preston Godfrey had two of CAC's nine hits, including a tying RBI single in the seventh following a two-out triple by JD McLaughlin. Also driving in one run apiece were Seth Beckstead and Matt Aribal.

McLaughlin, the Vaqueros' fifth pitcher of the game, came on from center field with two outs in the top of the 10th to strike out the only batter he faced and get the win. Starter Daniel Davila allowed one run in five innings. Liam Evans pitched a scoreless eighth and Drew Sommers followed with 1 2/3 scoreless innings.

"The thing I'm most happy with is we've found a lot of different ways to win," CAC coach Anthony Gilich said. "We're on pace for what I was hoping for. We want to challenge in every inning whether we score or not, and we've been pretty successful doing that."

The Vaqueros are averaging 9.1 runs per game and have a team batting average of .323. Of their 80 hits, 32 have gone for extra bases (10 doubles, six triples, 10 home runs).

The pitching staff has a collective ERA of 1.57, with 102 strikeouts and 32 walks in 63 innings.

"All the way around it's been so far, so good," Gilich said. "It's exciting to see them have some success because we're going to need everybody" over the course of the season.

The Vaqueros won both ends of Saturday's doubleheader at Tempe Diablo Stadium, prevailing 4-2 in the opener and 11-1 in Game 2.

The Bruins (3-7) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of Game 1 — the first time the Vaqueros have trailed this season. Central responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning, with the big hit being Dixon's two-run single.

Aribal had two of CAC's eight hits in the seven-inning game.

Starting pitcher Tyler Woessner (2-0) allowed two runs and two hits in four innings. Sommers followed with two scoreless innings, and DJ Carpenter notched his first save with a scoreless seventh.

Hunter Omlid (2-0) and Leo Palacio combined for a one-hitter in the second game. Omlid struck out 12 and walked one in six innings, giving up a run in the third. Palacios struck out eight of the 10 batters he faced, allowing zero hits in the last three innings.

Dayton Dooney went 2 for 3 with two triples and five RBIs. Dixon also had two of Central's 11 hits, including a double. Driving in one run apiece were Dixon, McLaughlin, Hayden Seldomridge, Ryan Grabosch and Tyler Griggs. Aribal had a triple for CAC, which put up five runs in the eighth inning after scoring two in the third, one in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth.

The Vaqueros conclude nonconference play this week with single games against GateWay on Friday and Saturday at CAC Field.
