Vaqueros Take It To Cochise With Tuesday Sweep

-Blade Contributing Writer CAC Athletics

(Douglas) - With a 12-0 start or not, coming back from two at Cochise Community College with two wins is always a big day.

Death and taxes.

Games against the Apaches are never "games we should win".

With a sweep of Cochise, the Vaqueros have won their first 14 games of the 2021 season, it reminds you of the 17-0 start in the spring of the 2016 year.

Central is now 4-0 in the ACCAC, arguably the toughest JUCO baseball conference in the USA.

"We played good all around" said the head coach Anthony Gilich.

"Everyone made the plays they should have, Hunter threw well and so did their arm, that first game could have only taken an hour and 35 minutes."

Their arm truly did throw well. Nate Rohlicek took the loss (2-1), but took ten Vaqueros with him and didn't walk a batter. Central's Hunter Omlid threw all seven and won his third straight by not giving any walks, striking out three and watching his defense make all it's plays in a 3-1 first game win on Tuesday down south.

"Beckstead hit another one, pretty much just like the one he hit Saturday" continued Gilich.

Said catcher Seth Beckstead this past Saturday on his first homerun..."glad to get that first one out of the way."

The second was far into left field in the top of the 7th to put Central up 3-1, and there it stood.

Omlid threw 93 pitches, 68 for strikes.

"He's a big strike thrower" said Gilich.

Central took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth with singles by Preston Godfrey and Dayton Dooney, an Apache error, and a sacrifice fly from Kiko Romero. SS Devon Dixon also doubled in the game.

In game two, starter Tyler Woessner (3-0) threw five innings of the nine inning game, striking out five and giving up only two earned runs, another more than solid start.

Drew Sommers, Leo Palacios, and DJ Carpenter held the Apaches to one run in the final four innings, which is no minor accomplishment against these people.

Cochise led 2-1 after five innings, but Central put up four in the top of the sixth, JD McLaughlin tripled scoring Dayton Dooney, Romero doubled him in and Ryan Grabosch completed a safety squeeze with runners on first and third. Grabosch laid one down with Romero on third. There was a play at the plate and Kiko scored.

Who doesn't love a catcher that can bunt. Especially in that situation.

Hayden Seldomridge did what you'd want your DH to do, he doubled in two more runs in the seventh to give Central a very nice 7-2 lead. McLaughlin and Romero each had two hits in game two.

The game two final was 7-3.

The coaches and team were quite happy to drive home with two wins.

"It's always tough playing down there after a three hour ride" said Gilich.

Whew.

Nothing troubling it seems so far, still with things to see and learn from new players and second year players. It's community college baseball, you have to grow up fast, or contribute right away, and the great thing is with this impressive start, you can't point to one guy on this Central team.

14-0.

Amazing.

Back at The Big House Saturday for the nooner DH with Scottsdale Community College. The starters are Mat Olsen (3-0) and Daniel Davila (2-0).
