Vaqueros Take It To 16-0 With Sweep Against Scottsdale

-Blade-Contributing Writer Central Arizona College Athletics

(Coolidge) - It's possible it could be boring saying the same thing after the last three or four doubleheaders.

"Yeah we had a good day, played well all around..."

The head coach Anthony Gilich seems to have said that fairly frequently lately.

When you're 16-0 there probably isn't much else to say.

Boring?

No.

What coach wouldn't want to say that after each weekend.

In the first of two against Scottsdale Community College, the lineup was tweaked a little bit as Dayton Dooney and Preston Godfrey sat all day.

"A little banged up" said the head coach.

Tyler Griggs took over third base as Vinnie Lagatta rested up, Matt Aribal started at second, JD McLaughlin moved to left and speedy Dusty Garcia played center.

No problem!

After a Jake Jarvis double and three straight walks in the second inning, Griggs hit a bases-loaded barrelled-up line drive into right field that everyone knew was out, but that desert wind was blowing straight in from right and knocked the ball down into a dive that almost hit the 0 at the 340 sign.

Everyone scored giving the Vaqueros a 4-0 lead.

Griggs doubled, singled twice, and walked in a three-for three day from leadoff.

Kiko Romero then doubled scoring Griggs for a 5-0 lead after two innings. Central collected three walks and three doubles in that second inning.

Central starter Mat Olsen (4-0) had a day.

Olsen struck out ten in six innings and consistently got ahead in his counts with his moving fast balls that bit the outside corners all day. Sliders and curves on corners all day to beat the band.

With only six hits, the Vaqueros added five more walks and moved runners around with a few pitcher throwing errors and the game 1 final was 7-1.

Game 2 starter Daniel Davila seemed like he had the extra pop commanding the start of the game and it stayed that way through his five and two-thirds innings pitched.

Davila won his third game of the year striking out seven and giving up just one pass.

8-8-8 at the plate.

Eight hits, eight ribs, eight walks for Central. There was another "eight" there but no matter. : )

McLaughlin and Romero each got two hits, with McLaughlin hitting his third triple of the year and driving in three, Romero and DH Hayden Seldomridge both drove home two.

McLaughlin also stole home in the 6th inning. You should have heard the cheers.

Central had a 7-1 lead with JD on third as third base coach Gilich called it, and in the pitcher wind-up, off went McLaughlin, and with the slide, he was safe.

The game two final was 11-3 and Central moves to 16-0 on the year and 6-0 in conference play.
