One Run For Gateway in Vaquero Sweep

-Blade Contributing Writer Central Arizona College Athletics

(Mesa)- "We're a little bit older so maybe that's why this group is so focused and mature. It doesn't matter who we play, the guys are focused in practice too"

-Vaqueros head coach Anthony Gilich

In the first seven inning game, it was another fabulous start for Hunter Omlid (4-0) who threw the first six innings canning six and giving up just two hits.

Omlid now sports an ERA of .067 in 26.2 innings pitched this year.

Amazing Stat:

35 k's and three walks.

Shane Spencer threw the scoreles seventh with the pair giving up just three hits and the final in game one was 4-0.

Kiko Romero, Jake Jarvis, and Seth Beckstead all doubled as part of Central's eight hits, but Jarvis got one stuck under the fence after a towering drive to left center, so after the triple he and the runner were called back one base.

No problem.

These two games against Gateway Community College were played at their home field in Mesa, the fabled Gene Autry Park, former home of the Anaheim (now Los Angeles) Angels for spring training.

It's a big field.

In game two, third baseman Vinnie Lagatta had room to run when his lead off two-hopper line drive into the deepest part of the field in left center (around 420?), made for a very exciting inside-the park homerun. It was a close play at the plate.

Central scored four in that first inning and added another seven for a game two final of 11-1.

Tyler Woessner won his fourth of the year throwing five and striking out three, two-way player Evan Harmon made his first pitching appearance of the year, a scoreless sixth, and Cristian Sanchez struck out the seventh.

OK that's 18-0 heading into a nice confrontation with Arizona Western this weekend in Yuma.

Western is 14-4 overall and 6-2 in conference.

Devon Dixon ripped three singles, Romero had a bases clearing double, and JD McLaughlin tripled again (his fourth). Catcher Ryan Grabosch had two hard hit singles, so did Jarvis and Dusty Garcia.

Central had 15 hits in game two.
