Bats And More Bats As Central Wins 22nd Straight

-Blade-Contributing writer Central Arizona College Athletics

(Tucson) - That's 22 in a row.

The MLB record is 22 set by the Cleveland Indians in 2017.

You can't really compare.

Sure you can.

It's baseball, where just a ten game winning streak is monumental, at ANY level. Winning streaks are what sets baseball teams apart, as are losing streaks.

If you can put together a good winning streak, that tells everybody something.

But back to comparing, if you really want compare, compare with the Homer High School in Michigan, who won 75 in a row in 2004-05.

Perfect name right?

All that means nothing if you don't win it all they say. And that's absolutely what the team will tell you, but we as fans are allowed to really enjoy it.

You just wonder if anyone can stop the Central Arizona College bats. The Vaqueros added 30 more hits on Tuesday night in Tucson and swept the doubleheader with Pima Community College with scores of 13-4 and 13-5.

Starting with JD McLaughlin who went 5-9 with four doubles and one of those doubles ended up being an inside the park homerun when the ball was slightly misplayed (or bad hop).

McLaughlin is now hitting .357 and leads the team in RBI's with 22, stolen bases with 12, and is tied with injured Dayton Dooney in triples with 4.

Add in another eight doubles to that line.

Team batting leader Matt Aribal remains a nice story as he went 3-5 with a double and leads the team with an average of .414.

"They have good hitters on that team" said head Coach Anthony Gilich of Pima. "They're well coached."

"But on our end, everyone is contributing in hitting the baseball. Guys that are stepping in, are stepping up. It's fun."

Hunter Omlid threw a strong five and won his fifth game, and relievers Drew Sommers and Cristian Sanchez threw fabulous innings to end the seven inning game.

Dusty Garcia had a day, going 3-9 with a double in game one, and a poke game two.

"That one was crushed" said Gilich of Garcia's game 2 homerun.

"It cleared the right field wall and then it cleared the people on the hill, and then it cleared the hill."

"He's an athetic freak" added Gilich. "He just keeps digging and digging, he's on fire."

Central's top five batters totaled 11 hits to help Central in game 1, and it was almost more the bottom hitters in the order that did it for Central in game 2.

Ryan Grabosch, Devon Dixon and Aribal all combined for seven hits and four rbi's in game two as the 7th, 8th, and 9th hitters.

Tyler Woessner (5-0) looked great, and as in Woessner form, got even better as he went along. He struck out six and walked only one.

"He gets so pumped up in the beginning" said Gilich of Woessner. "Once he settles in, he's very very hard to beat."

Amazing Stat:

Catcher Ryan Grabosch has thrown out 80% of his base stealers this year.

Catcher Seth Beckstead has thrown out over 35% of his runners.

"Even 35% is really good" said Gilich, just to give you some perspective.

After Woessner's five innings, it was Liam Evans and Evan Harmon closing out the Aztecs in game two.

You can't downplay it any more.

22-0.

22 straight wins is really something, and it's just as big that they haven't lost even once.

Eastern Arizona visits for a double header on Saturday at The Big House.
