Central Now 24-0 But It Wasn't Easy

"This could be the first time all year here we don't have a wind" said the head coach Anthony Gilich.

75 degrees and sun, let's play two.

And he had bigger thoughts than that when this day was over.

"We always talk about finding a way to win. You only need one."

It's a doubleheader so Central Arizona College needed two.

In game one, the Vaquero bats had six triples and two homeruns after only five innings, and held an 11-5 lead that didn't hold up.

Kiko Romero and Preston Godfrey both tripled in the first and fifth innings with two hoppers to the gap.

JD McLaughlin and Seth Beckstead both gapped triples, then Godfrey killed a three-run homer to right in the fourth.

Devon Dixon blasted a two-run bomb to left.

Mat Olsen threw a very tidy four innings striking out four, giving up only one single and no runs, and the score after those four was 7-0.

In the fifth Cristian Sanchez brought the gas, but had a little trouble finding the plate according to the home plate umpire, and after five walks, in came Evan Harmon, then Liam Evans.

A few walks and seven singles later, this game was tied 11-11 after six.

Drew Sommers battled through a very tough top of the 7th with a few long at bats but got the final out with two men on base with consecutive strikeouts.

In the bottom of the 7th with one out, Romero was hit by a pitch, and advanced to second with a wild pitch. Eastern Arizona intentionally walked MClaughlin and then clean-up hitter Hayden Seldomridge also walked.

With one out and the bases loaded with the infield and outfield all drawn in, Dusty Garcia bounced a hard grounder up the middle for a walk-off win and a final of 12-11.

Well, that's one way to win.

In game two "we were just getting beat, it was a good baseball game" said Gilich.

"In the first game we kind of handed it to them, but the second, they were just plain beating us."

Zack Stewart touches home and helmets in the second inning of game two.

Eighth batter Zack Stewart got a nice fastball with a full count and hit a high and long three run homerun to left which put Central up 3-1 in the bottom of the second, and that's all they could get until the bottom of the eighth.

"No, their second pitcher was really good" said Gilich.

"He had really given us a hard time for about four innings."

Central starter Daniel Davila threw six and two thirds with eight strikeouts and no walks, but with a single here and another there, Eastern had put up six runs to take a 6-3 lead.

"We always feel like we have a great chance with our hitters and the two runs we got in the bottom of the eighth made it a little easier for us in the bottom of the ninth" said Gilich.

Shane Spencer threw the final two and a third innings keeping Eastern scoreless and in the bottom of the ninth, the first batter Matt Aribal hit a rocket down the first base line which appeared like a sure two (if not more), but the first baseman made a great play and with one out, Central found yet another way to win.

Godfrey reached on a walk, Romero singled and McLaughlin trapped a pitch and hit it into the desert in left. Way into the desert.

It's a walk-off three-run homerun for the sweep and 24th straight win, and you'd have thought that Central won another national championship when McLaughlin crossed the plate.

What a celebration.

Central found the gutsy way to win this one.

Amazing stat:

Shortstop Devon Dixon is 9-9 in his last three games.

No walks.

Nine straight hits.

"Whew" said Gilich, at least twice after this all ended.

Central is now 14-0 in conference and 24-0 over all.
