Another Split For Vaqueros-This Time With Yavapai

Things have tightened up a touch in the ACCAC.

With a Pima Community College sweep against Cochise and the Central Arizona split with Yavapai on Tuesday, Central stands at 32-2 (22-2) and Pima is now three games back.

It's the same saying, "when these two teams get together..."

There's always a litttle "gulp" in your preparation and the bus ride up to Yavapai.

Kiko Romero and Dusty Garcia scored seven of the Vaqueros nine runs in the first game of two up in Yavapai and Central held off the Roughriders 9-6.

Yavapai can hit them out like Central can (45 HR Yavapai, 41 HR Central) and they also have a nice team batting average of .323, so Hunter Omlid did Hunter Omlid while striking out seven Yavapai's and walking only one, but two went out on him in his 5.1 and he got into a little trouble in the sixth inning with a few hits and his first walk, then on came Drew Sommers who gave up a walk and hit and the damage was four runs.

With a 7-6 lead after six, Central was Central and answered with two more runs in the top of the seventh for a 9-6 lead and Sommers locked up the win in the bottom of the seventh with a DP grounder and strikeout.

What a game for Garcia who yanked two out and also doubled for four rbi's while scoring three times. To boot-the double hit off the top of the fence. His second homerun was a needed big breath of relief in the top of the seventh to give the Vaqueros their three run margin.

Central first baseman Romero scored three times in front of Garcia's bat and also scored during his own at-bat as he hit his second homerun of the year and upped his average to .342.

Garcia, after both games, now has an average of .344 and there is a log-jam at the top of the team batting averages.

"Kiko is a dynamic hitter, he hits in every way" said head coach Anthony Gilich.

"He hits line drives, he can slap a single through the infield if ne needs to, he can hit a homerun for you" continued the head coach.

"He's a pure hitter."

JD McLaughlin also hit two homeruns in the DH, the first one pulled long into right field in game one. The second was opposite field into left in game two. He's got eight on the year to go along with seven triples.

In total, 32 runs were scored in the double-header.

"I don't think I've ever come up here to Yavapai and seen a 2-1 ball game" Gilich threw in.

"You think about thinner air and a shorter field, it reminds you of Grand Junction."

Tyler Woessner has been there and thrown in Grand Junction.

"He threw pretty well" said Gilich of Woessners' game two start.

"He got better as he went along. I thought he was about ready for Shane Spencer to relieve him in that seventh inning and Spencer was ready. When I went to talk to him, he talked me out of it. He was quite confident."

With two outs, and the bases loaded, Woessner got a little flyout to center to end the inning. Woessner struck out seven and gave up four runs, which is the equivalent of giving up two at Yavapai.

Everything was safe with Central holding an 8-4 lead after seven.

Ummmmmm......

The bottom of the eight inning provided two Central errors, a double, a sac fly, and a couple of homeruns for a grand total of five runs. The Roughriders held on in Central's top of the ninth and the final was 9-8, CAC's second loss of the year.

You have to think with a short outfield, any error or any kind of freebie can hurt you more up here.

"That's how it is, yeah." said Gilich unemotionally.

The Big House for this weekend's DH against Arizona Western.

Mat Olsen and Liam Evans are the starters.
