It's A Split With South Mountain For Central-ACCAC Lead At Four

A travel into Phoenix for two against South Mountain Community College didn't end all that well, but it sure started well.

"We played really well in game one" said head coach Anthony Gilich.

"Between the pitching and the defense, we just put ourselves in a tough spot" he continued.

Central starter Hunter Omlid is pitching very very well, and it's not like he's on a hot streak, he's pitched well the entire season. With just over five innings pitched in game one, he struck out five and did not walk a batter.

South Mountain had five hits against him, and managed two runs, then Central took a tight lead at 3-2 and piled on five runs in the top of the sixth to win 8-2.

Omlid (10-0) has an incredible k's-to-walks ratio of 7-1 right now. A total of 69 punches and nine walks.

As a fielder, he's one of those guys that a defense can walk out on the field and feel really good about. All season, it's been command and weak contact, very few freebies.

Drew Sommers relieved Omlid after 5 and 1/3 and kept the Cougars quiet while striking out three batters without a walk.

With Dayton Dooney and Vinnie Lagatta doubles, Jake Jarvis, Preston Godfrey, and JD McLaughlin all added a couple of hits of their own for a total of ten.

A wild game two.

South Mountain had an 8-2 lead after six innings.

Some days as a pitcher are unexplainable. Ask a few pitchers from either side in game two.

In the top of the seventh, the Vaqueros scored a big six runs to tie the game at eight but Vaq pitching couldn't quiet the Bears bats.

South Mountain came back with four runs in the bottom of the seventh, then six more in the bottom of the eighth to put this one away.

It was anyone's game from that seventh inning on as Central Arizona answered nicely in the top of the eighth with three runs to make it 12-11 SMCC.

Overall, it was one half of an inning (and it was a big one oh yeah) that kept CAC from the sweep of the day.

Surely a shoot-out, South Mountain shot more this day. The final was 18-11.

Dooney doubled and drove in three, Tyler Griggs cleared the bases with a double, and Matt Aribal homered for some great highlights from Central bats in game two.

With a Pima sweep Tuesday, the Vaqueros have a four game lead with just three series to go and stand at a whopping 38-4 overall, and 28-4 in conference play.
