District 1 Finals Game 1 Goes To Central

"Yeah we played a good game-no errors and hit the ball around a little bit" said head coach Anthony Gilich.

"They didn't have any errors either but we got to the Western Nebraska bullpen. They're a good team, their starter had a nice arm, he did a good job."

The conversation with the coach was brief, post-game. The Vaquero staff was in the stands watching the second game of the day with College of Southern Nevada and Yavapai in Prescott.

At the time, Southern Nevada was leading 7-0 but it ended up being an almost four hour game and Yavapai won in extra innings 16-13.

"The score looks worse than what the game was. The big home runs is what hurt," Cougars head coach Mike Jones said.

"Overall, we did play pretty well. I thought Paul Panduro did a good job of controlling their offense. Their offense is a pretty powerful lineup. Paul did a good job of keeping them under control and giving us a chance. Jayden Orozco hit the big home run to bring it to within a 1-run game. Unfortunately, we couldn't control their offense the entire nine innings."

With Central's 13-4 win Thursday, they will face Yavapai in Friday's winners bracket game.

The run-rule in post season is a ten run lead after five, and an eight run lead after seven.

Eleven of Central's 13 runs were knocked in by JD McLaughlin, Jake Jarvis and Dayton Dooney, and the Vaqueros clubbed five homeruns on the day.

"We went into the day hunting strikeouts" said the head coach when talking about game one starter Hunter Omlid.

Omlid got 8 strikeouts in 6.2 innings and reliever Drew Sommers struck out two more in an inning and a third, job-well-done.

It's fairly well assumed...or at least always talked about...that there will be high scoring ballgames at Yavapai's Roughrider field. This place is where you REALLY need pitching and Central had it.

A the plate, Jarvis hit two balls out, McLaughlin tripled and homered, Dooney and Devon Dixon also hit homeruns. Another rough outing for a Central opponent's bullpen.
