SIGNAL PEAK — The Central Arizona College softball team swept its doubleheader against Chandler-Gilbert Community College, 11-2 in six innings, and 6-5 in eight innings, Saturday at CAC Field.

Kyrstan Garcia delivered a solid performance, pitching all six innings in Game 1 and coming in on relief in Game 2 to get the victory. Garcia combined for 10 strikeouts, including seven in the first game, and allowed seven hits overall. The right-handed pitcher gave up one hit in Game 2 in 3 1/3 innings of relief.

"She was just confident on the mound," CAC coach Shelby Davis said. "She can come in at any point in the game and knows that she can get the job done."

Garcia got off to a rocky start, giving up two runs in the first inning, but quickly settled down and helped her team out at the plate going 3 for 4 with two doubles. The Vaqueras tied the game up at two runs apiece before Lindsey Smith sent a solo homer over the left field fence for the lead.

CAC (27-6, 20-3 ACCAC) entered the sixth inning with a 5-2 lead, before tacking on six runs to earn the run-rule victory of 11-2.

It was the third run-rule victory by Central Arizona over Chandler-Gilbert this season. The first two came Jan. 31, when the Vaqueras won both games with a combined score of 42-5.

"I think that they got better, they obviously came to play today," Davis said. "We were kind of lacking focus; when you beat someone the way we did the first time, we just assume that it's going to happen again."

Game 2 on Saturday afternoon had a different feel than the previous three. Both teams went scoreless into the third inning until CGCC's Cristina Contreras scored on a Danica Milan hit for the lead. CAC answered back in the bottom frame with a two-RBI hit from Brianna Moeller, grabbing a 2-1 lead.

The Coyotes (4-20, 4-20) recorded a big inning against CAC pitcher Lauren Shirley, who gave up four runs before Garcia entered in relief to record the final out of the frame. The Vaqueras answered back with two runs of their own to cut the deficit to 5-4.

CAC added one more run on a sac fly from Ashleigh Withers in the sixth to even things up at five runs each. After neither team scored in the seventh inning, the international tiebreaker rule was in effect for the eighth inning.

CGCC went down in order and could not move the runner at second. The Vaqueras finished the game after a sac bunt from Annalisa Cordova moved the runner to third and Withers delivered the game winning hit to the left side of the infield.

CAC will travel to Paradise Valley for a doubleheader next Thursday, with Game 1 starting at 1 p.m.
