Vaqueras head into May, eye playoff run

YUMA, AZ — Central Arizona College (24-11, 18-8) split the weekend doubleheader with the Matadors (26-13, 14-8), as they lost game one 4-1 and then won the second game in comeback fashion, 2-1. In game one, RHP Sarah Norton had a line of 6 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, and 4 K's. Despite the solid outing for Norton and an offensive performance that featured the Vaqueras out-hitting Arizona Westerm, CAC was unable to come out on top.  In the top of the 6th, the Vaqueras stranded the bases loaded. In the top of the seventh, CAC again put runners on first and second but were unable to plate any runs across. Offensively in game one, Freshman catcher Bella Garcia tallied two hits (one double) and freshman infielder Serinah Sanchez was 3 for 3. Freshman 1B Sabrina Garcia and freshman P/OF Jessica Mercado also tallied extra-base hits (doubles) in game one.

In game two, Jessica Mercado picked up the complete-game win, tossing a line of 7 IP, 1 R, 9 H, 5 K's, & 2 BB's. Mercado also helped herself at the plate by tallying two hits. Heading into the top of the 7th, CAC trailed 1-0. Freshman infielder Cheyenne Hudson led of the inning with a base-hit back up the middle. Following a sacrifice bunt by sophomoe infiedler Nicol Ley, the Vaqueras had a runner at second and one out. On the first pitch of the next at-bat, Sophomore outfielder Sonia Solis roped a double into the left-center gap, scoring Hudson and tying the game. With the ball game tied, Bella Garcia stepped up to the plate and drove in pinch runner Logan Kelly for the eventual game winning RBI single.

CAC will finish off the regular season with a home doubleheader on May 1st vs Yavapai, followed with a road doubleheader at Eastern Arizona on May 4th. The regional tournament will take place May 14th-15th.
