YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western College Matadors Baseball team (12-4, 3-3) split a doubleheader with No. 7 ranked Central Arizona (11-5, 3-1) on Tuesday afternoon, winning game one 4-3 before falling 12-7 in game two at Walt Kammann Baseball Field.
Eli Watson went 3-for-3 with a run scored while Carlos Uribe stuck out six batters in five innings, allowing one earned run, in the Matadors' 4-3 win in game one.
Arizona Western opened the scoring in the first inning on a Sergio DeCello sacrifice fly before Central Arizona scored a run in the third and another in the fifth to grab a 2-1 lead. The Matadors took the lead back in the sixth inning getting runs on a Luca Hoerger single and a Fausto Sanchez pinch-hit single, putting the Matadors in front 3-2.
After the Vaqueros tied the game in the top of the seventh the Matadors plated the winning run in the bottom half thanks to a Nathan Houston bases-loaded walk.
Mac Robertson earned the win in relief, allowing one run and striking out a batter in one inning of work. Alex Flores also tossed a scoreless inning in relief.
The Matadors jumped out to an early lead in game two, taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning on two bases-loaded walks worked by Taehyung Kim and Hoerger. Arizona Western added a third run in the fourth on a Sanchez RBI groundout.
Central Arizona batted 11 times in the fifth inning and scored seven runs to take a 7-3 lead. The Matadors answered in the sixth inning, batting nine times and scoring three runs on a Robert Miranda single, a Bronson Nieve single, and a Kim single to tie the game at 7-7.
The Vaqueros scored the final five runs of the game to take the finale 12-7.
Kim finished the second game 2-for-4 with a walk and two RBIs while Hugo Tafoya set a season-high with three innings pitched and struck out three in a no-decision in his first career start.
