Vinnie Lagatta rips game ending double to help Central win in bottom of the 9th.

Vaqueros Win First Game At Zinger Tourney on Lagatta Double

"We hit well which was great, we were poor on the bases, it was so windy and cold so there wasn't a whole lot of crisp playing' said head coach Anthony Gilich.

It MAY have reached 60 degrees at Sloan Park in Mesa for this first Zinger Tourney baseball matchup between Salt Lake Community College and the Central Arizona College Vaquereos. Add in the wind and you'd understand how things appeared to get a little sloppy.

But both teams got it right?

Central came from behind for all of the first seven innings to tie the game in the seventh before a scoreless eighth and ninth sent both teams to a Texas Tiebreaker format for the tenth inning.

"Yeah we talked about that in pre-game, it's early in the season, and other teams have games to play on the same field so we didn't want any really long games, it was just better we used this format" Gilich said.

The Texas Tiebreaker format has each team starting off their half of the inning with bases loaded and one out. The runners are the last three in the order from the previous inning.

In the Bears top of the tenth, reliever Drew Sommers got a come-backer to home for the second out, but then hit the next Bear for a run, and then a walk got a second run in, before Sommers got a ground to third to end the inning.

Down two in the bottom of the tenth, Logan Valencia led off and was hit by a pitch for one run. Catcher Trey Newman hit a fly ball to right center which ended up almost coming back to the infield in the wind. The ball was caught and the throw home with the runner tagging skipped away from the SLCC catcher tying the game.

With two outs and runners on second and third, pich hitter Vinnie Lagatta smoked one into the gap to bring in the winning run.

Central moves to 5-0 with the Lagatta walk-off.

It's always special when you come out on top in conditions that really affect both teams.

Central had fourteen hits with eight coming from the top five hitters. Blake Avila, Tyler Griggs and Chase Valentine all doubled in the game along with Lagatta's game ending two- bagger. Shortstop Chase Valentine had three hits including a triple in the game.
