Vaquero DB9 Takes Two More On Saturday To Move To 7-0

Central Arizona College moves on to the championship of the Zinger Baseball Tourney in Mesa on Sunday by winning two more games on a beautiful Saturday. The championship game will feature Central and a rematch with New Mexico Junior College who Central snuffed out in the early Saturday game.

Tyler Woessner started this game and gave up three singles and a walk without an out in the first inning to give NMJC it's first run, and that was it for the rest of the game.

Toughness. Getting yourself out of a no-out bases loaded jam.

Due to top-notch pitching in this one, runs were at a premium so it took a seventh inning safety squeeze from Vinnie Lagatta scoring Tyler Griggs as Central tied it at one, and on to the Texas Tiebreaker 10th. This tie-breaker system starts with bases loaded and one out.

With Matt Wilkinson pitching in his third inning, he struck out the first batter for out number one, and a comebacker ended the top of the tenth. In the bottom, it was Tyrese Johnson's first college hit as the lead-off hitter into right center, and game over.

The final was 2-1.

Tyson Heaton was the game two winning pitcher as he threw a pitch count five and two thirds, striking out eight with just a single walk. When he was removed, Central had batted in seven runs in the first three innings and had a 7-1 lead.

Yavapai is a very very good baseball program as many know, and they came on to score four runs in the seventh to make the score 7-5, and Sam Rochard closed out the final two and two thirds innings keeping the Roughriders scoreless, striking out five. He gets a save. Heaton won his first game as a Vaquero.

"He has been doing exceptionally well so far" said head coach Anthony Gilich of Sam Rochard.

"We played pretty well today, hitting, pitching and defensively. Kiko Romero, Logan Valencia, and Ashtin Webb are hitting well."

Webb doubled and lifted a homerun.

The final was 7-5 good guys.

The Sunday championship starts at 12 noon and Central will have it's first home game Wednesday afternoon at 2PM against Division II Phoenix College. Phoenix was the team that ended Centrals' season opening 31 game winning streak last year.
