Central Baseball Takes A Big Saturday Sweep As Conference Play Starts

By ED PETRUSKA Contributing Writer Pinal Central

SIGNAL PEAK – All was good for the Central Arizona College baseball team in Saturday's doubleheader sweep of Pima at CAC's newly named McSwain Field.

The second-ranked Vaqueros began Arizona Community College Athletic Conference play with 9-1 and 8-2 wins over the Aztecs.

"Getting those first two conference wins was big," CAC coach Anthony Gilich said. "The pitchers threw strikes, the defense made plays and the offense put up some crooked numbers. That's the formula (for success)."

Chase Valentine was the batting star of Game 1 for the Vaqueros (10-1, 2-0 ACCAC), going 3 for 4 with six RBIs. Starting pitcher Tyler Woessner registered 10 strikeouts without issuing a walk in five-plus innings.

Central took a 2-0 lead in the first against Pima left-hander Bradon Zastrow on Valentine's triple to right. Scoring were Ryan Ball, who led off with a single, and Logan Valencia, who doubled to right with two outs.

Pima (8-4, 0-2 ACCAC) made it 2-1 in the top of the second when Trent Kiraly came home on a wild pitch.

CAC struck for three runs in the third off Zastrow. Following a single by Ashtin Webb and a walk to Kiko Romero, Valencia moved the runners over with a groundout to short. Valentine drove them in with a double to left.

The Vaqueros sent eight batters to the plate in their four-run sixth. Ball's solo home run to right off reliever Wilson Bannister started the two-out rally. Central then loaded the bases on Webb's double to left and walks to Romero and Valencia.

Valentine greeted reliever Hudson White with a two-run single to center, and Valencia continued home on an error.

CAC finished with 10 hits, five of which went for extra bases. Ball, Webb and Vinnie LaGatta each had two hits for the Vaqueros.

Woessner, a right-hander making his third start, allowed seven hits. He is 2-0 on the season with a 0.60 ERA. He struck out two batters in each of the first five innings.

Drew Sommers came on to get the final six outs after Jose Enriquez led off the Pima sixth with a single. That inning ended with CAC turning a 5-4-3 double play. Sommers, who struck out two and walked one, retired the Aztecs in order in the seventh.

Josh Lackner had two of Pima's six hits, including a one-out double in the second.

The Vaqueros snapped a 2-2 tie in Game 2 with a six-run eighth inning. Romero knocked in the go-ahead run with a single and pinch hitter Tyler Griggs made it 6-2 with a three-run double. The next run scored on an error and the last one on Blake Avila's RBI single.

Central took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Romero had an RBI single. He then stole second and continued home on a throwing error.

Romero and Devon Dixon each had two of CAC's eight hits.

Starting pitcher Tyson Heaton went seven innings, giving up single runs in the second and seventh. The right-hander allowed seven hits, struck out three, walked one and hit one.

Matt Wilkinson (2-0) pitched 1 1/3 innings to notch the win. He gave up one hit and struck out three. Daniel Davila got the final two outs, walking one.

The Vaqueros won their first eight nonconference games prior to a 6-5 loss in 10 innings to Phoenix in Wednesday's home opener.

"We're off to a good start," Gilich said. "Every year is different and we're still kind of finding out the personality of this team and what makes them click."
