Vaqueros Head Coach Anthony Gilich Named 2022 ACCAC Coach Of The Year-Six More Vaquero Players Named

 

The All-ACCAC/Region I baseball teams have been released and Vaqueros head coach Anthony Gilich was named the 2021-22 ACCAC coach of the year.

He currently owns the best winning percentage among all coaches in the history of the program (.741) with a 335-117 record and started the 2016 campaign with 17 consecutive wins, but topped that last year with a 31-0 start of the season. Gilich's 2019 team won the JUCO Word Series title and was a finalist in 2021.

This regular season ended with a 46-10 record and a regular season championship. In his eight years, 40 players (including this year) have been selected ALL-ACCAC, 2 named ACCAC Player/Pitcher of the Year (Caleb Henderson, Mat Olsen), 3 NJCAA All Americans (Grant Townsend, Mat Olsen, JD McLaughlin), 2 NJCAA Rawlings Gold Glove (Pikai Winchester, Mat Olsen), 19 players drafted and 100 have committed to four-year universities.

Central Assistant Coach Joe Perez was earlier in the year named a National Assistant Coach of the Year by the ABCA.

CAC had three players named to the 2021-22 all-ACCAC first team and three selected to the all-ACCAC second team.

The first-team picks were pitcher Tyler Woessner, first baseman Kiko Romero and outfielder Jaylin Rae. Romero and Rae also were Gold Glove winners.

Woessner, a right-hander who imay start in the Game 1 Regional Thursday (the official starter has not been named) is 8-2 in 13 starts with a 2.82 ERA. He has struck out 91 and walked 18 in 67 innings. Romero is batting .354 – tied with Rae for the team lead – and also has a team-best 13 homers, 56 RBIs and 15 stolen bases. In addition, Romero has 18 doubles and a team-high four triples. Rae has 34 RBIs and 12 steals.

Named to the all-conference second team were starting pitchers Shane Spencer and Tyson Heaton – both right-handers-- and second baseman Ryan Ball. Spencer is 10-1 in 13 starts with a 3.90 ERA, 88 strikeouts and 14 walks in 62 1/3 innings. Heaton is 7-2 in 14 appearances (13 starts) with a 3.71 ERA, 82 strikeouts and 18 walks in 68 innings. Ball is batting .316 with 11 home runs and 40 RBIs.

Player of the Year was Sean Rimmer, of Yavapai. Pitcher of the Year was Marco Ozuna, of Cochise.
